Peter Futcher
Peter Futcher is a British conductor, singer, and composer recognised for his imaginative and collaborative approach to choral music. With a background that began as a church chorister and organist, Peter has developed a reputation for inspiring choirs of all sizes and abilities to perform with precision, warmth, and purpose. His rehearsals are known for their meticulous attention to text and communication, and for an interpretative depth that seeks to make every performance
less ordinary.
Peter’s creative energy has led to performances with massed choirs as well as smaller chamber groups, often exploring repertoire that challenges singers to think and listen differently. He is equally at home directing, accompanying from the piano or organ, or shaping new musical projects that bring singers together. His approach is rooted in collaboration — working closely with choirs to unlock meaning, colour, and connection in every phrase. Peter regards himself as an equal partner in every ensemble and is recognised for leading rehearsals where music takes precedence over talk. He empowers singers to contribute meaningfully to the interpretation, ensuring the final result reflects a genuine collective artistry.
By day, Peter is a pastoral lead and Head of Music at a Kent school, combining his educational experience with a broad portfolio career as a conductor, musician, and leader. Beyond his work in education, he continues to direct choirs across the South East known for their expressive performances and community spirit.
Peter’s compositions and arrangements are published by the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM), Shorter House, and Hal Leonard (USA). His writing reflects his belief that choral music should move both singer and listener — music that is thoughtful, communicative, and unashamedly crafted to try to make listeners and singers alike feel something.
